At long last we can apply for a postal vote online as part of a number of changes to how postal and proxy voting works. Key changes are:

  • Voters can now apply online to vote by post and for some types of proxy vote
  • Voters need to prove their identity when applying to vote by post and by proxy
  • There are limits to how many people someone can act as a proxy for
  • Voters need to reapply for a postal vote every three years

The changes apply to UK Parliament elections in England, Scotland and Wales, including by-elections and recall petitions, local elections in England and Police and Crime Commissioner elections in England and Wales.

The limit to how many people a voter can act as a proxy for will also apply at local and Assembly elections in Northern Ireland.

Apply online

To apply for a postal vote online you will need:

  • to already be registered as a voter on the electoral register
  • the address where you are registered to vote
  • your National Insurance number or other identity documents, for example, a passport to hand

You’ll also need to upload a photo of your handwritten signature in black ink on plain white paper. You could do that with the camera on your computer or laptop or phone.
